| Dominating
the valley, the hill where the village is sheltered would
have been built of a Roman tour and then belt in fortified
village ("Castro Novo") which ramparts still exit.

It
is the second of the seventh settled Avignon Popes, Jean
XXII, who started building the Chateauneuf Pontifical
Estate. The Castel was finished in 1333 and the vineyard
started in the same time. The wine coming from his Estate
started to be famous then. |

Broke
by repetitous religious wars, The big Castel just remained with
a big keep. The last world war destroyed it half and it is hopefuly
the frontage that dominates the village that stayed still and
that stands still today. From there, you are a gerat scenic view.
The area delimited for producing Châteauneuf-du-Pape is
exploited by many vintners, each of them bringing their own personal
touch.
Our family is probably the most ancient of the village and our
archives date from 1405 where the Bertet were
in this "Pontifical" State "Nobilis Notabilis".
